Alright, so it’s been a while since I’ve posted, and with the coming of the new year – the new DECADE, I felt it was time to look both back on the past and forward to the future. So take your pick, or feel free to read both
Now:
10 years has gone by so fast, and with it some of the best and worst moments of my life. This was THE defining decade for me. I went from a random kid who had a lot of big ideas, to the person that I identify with today. I don’t always take the easy road, but I always try to be true to myself. I make decisions, big and small, with the knowledge that whether it’s tomorrow or another 10 years from now I want to look back at myself and feel like that was a genuine decision.
The other day when I was in Toronto I was listening to 102.1 The Edge, which was the radio station of choice for me back in highschool, and they played their list of the top 200 songs of the decade. I felt like I was in one of those TV flashbacks, since not only could I sing along with every song, but (almost) every song had a memory attached to it.
2010 and beyond will hold the moments of my adult life. But for a brief time between 2000 and 2010, between when I was 11/12 years old to 21/22 years old – I was in the process of “becoming me”.
So what have I learned? Things change. If you try hard enough the things that matter only change for the better, and the things that don’t fall by the wayside. Good and bad happen to everyone, but whether or not it helps the situation, your outlook will always help YOU. The world is a disappointing place at times – as Kit always quotes, “a person can be brilliant, talented, and smart. people are stupid.” – but it’s also a very exciting place.
I’ve learned that sometimes, just living is enough.

Ah, poor blog. It’s been sorely neglected in favour of the constant barrage of exams, preparations for the GMAT (the business equivalent of the MCAT or LSAT), and grad school applications. In my humble opinion it wouldn’t be amiss if life just slowed down a tiny bit so I can regain my balance and enjoy the last year of my undergraduate degree.
But, my usual complaints about life (too fast), the universe (too confusing), and everything (where do I even begin?) are not to be the focus of this entry. Instead I’ve got another personal quirk to share with everyone, one that some find hilarious and others find to be some sign of insanity. But this is me, we know which group I listen to
Ever since highschool I’ve had this random habit of naming things. Not pets or something that actually needs a name. No, I have a quirk which involves naming the perfectly inanimate objects that I have to deal with on a daily basis.
Now I realize where the crazy assessment of this whole idea comes in. The big question is – why?!
Well, for one I’m sure everyone has experienced that delightful moment where that sexy little piece of technology that facilitates your life just… dies. One minute you’re praising how shiny and fast it runs – the next you’re staring at the infamous “blue screen of death” and wondering how you could be blasted back into the stone age with just one frozen screen. Despite knowing that it’s just an inanimate object and did not wilfully ruin your life, you can’t help but HATE the darn thing.
So yes, not everything gets a name, but those that I find myself somewhat shamefully co-dependent on do. I have a system in deciding names. You see, you can either name it according to the personality it displays, or you can jump the gun and name it according to the personality you’re ultimately going to demand (blindly believe in?) from it.
Here’s a bit of a rundown on the past few devices that had the pleasure to be anthropomorphized.

The other day a friend had come over to spend the day studying at my place, and after a very intense afternoon of doing readings we decided it was high time for some fresh air. The area around downtown Ottawa is just gorgeous, if you’ve never been, and it’s fairly easy to start taking a walk and just get lost in the beautiful places the path can take you.
I live near the Rideau Canal, so quite often at any given time of year, I find myself walking along it. In some ways it’s more convenient than taking transit. It cuts straight through from near where I live, all the way to campus and then further on to the downtown core. I’ve got quite a few memories of us slipping and sliding all the way home on the iced over canal in winter, just for fun.
Anyways, so I’ve been here for my entire undergraduate degree (this will be my 4th year), and I’ve taken numerous walks around the city starting at that point.
So imagine my surprise when we got to the canal and my friend stops just before we turned right, and takes a good look on either side of the bridge and suddenly asks, “Have you ever been walking the other way?”.
